is it vaginismus you have?

Vaginal tightness, or difficulty or inability to allow penetration for intercourse is the primary symptom of Vaginismus. Normally, the vaginal sphincter keeps the vagina closed until (sexual stimulation) the need to expand and relax. This relaxation allows intercourse, childbirth, medical examination and insertion of tampons. Therefore, vaginismus occurs when the vagina is unable to relax and permit the penetration of the penis during intercourse however, when vaginismus does occur, the sphincter goes into spasm resulting in the tightening of the vagina. With some women, vaginismus prevents all attempts at successful intercourse. Vaginismus is not uncommon and may occur later in life, even if a woman has a history of enjoyable and painless intercourse.

The woman repeatedly has spasms of the vaginal muscles that interfere with sexual intercourse.

It causes marked distress or interpersonal problems.

Except for another Sexual Dysfunction, no other Axis I disorder (such as Somatization Disorder) accounts for it better.

It is not directly caused solely by a general medical condition.

Associated Features:

Recent or Past Sexual Trauma.
Fearful of Sexual Acts or Disgust.
Guilt.

Differential Diagnosis
Some disorders have similar or even the same symptoms. The clinician, therefore, in his/her diagnostic attempt has to differentiate against the following disorders which need to be ruled out to establish a precise diagnosis.

A General Medical Condition – a pelvic disease.
Cause:

The cause of vaginismus is often a result of an aversive stimulus associated with penetration. Some of the more common aversive stimuli are traumatic sexual assaults, painful intercourse, and traumatic pelvic exam.

Vaginismus may not only result from past sexual trauma but also the patient having strong inhibitions about sex stemming from strict religious orthodoxy or cultural norms.

This disorder does not mean that women suffering from this disorder are frigid. Many are very sexually responsive and may have orgasms through clitoral stimulation. Many women with vaginismus may seek sexual contact and sexual foreplay as long as actual intercourse/vaginal penetration is avoided.

Concepts such as penetration, intercourse and even sex can cause fear or trepidation in the mind of may a young inexperienced woman who may hear stories about painful first intercourse, which then reinforce the fear of penetration. This fear can compound and create a pattern of sexual anxiety, causing the vagina to remain dry and unrelaxed before intercourse.

In some cases, vaginismus may occur after a history of successful and enjoyable intercourse due to a vaginal infection, the physical after-effects of childbirth, tiredness or some other cause. This may be triggered by painful intercourse, due to the condition and then possibly lead to a pattern of further vaginismus even though the original cause has disappeared.

Treatment:

The treatment of vaginismus is usually a therapy program that includes vaginal dilation exercises using plastic dilators. It is important that the use of dilators proceeds in a systematic progression under the direction of a sex therapist and should actively involve the woman’s sexual partner. The treatment include gradually more intimate contact eventually culminating in successful and pain free intercourse. Sex education is also very important to counter sexual naivety and dispel any misinformation which has been identified as a factor in 90% of vaginismus cases. This education should include information about sexual anatomy, physiology, the sexual response cycle, and common myths about sex.

Counseling and Psychotherapy [ See Therapy Section ]:

In cases where there is a strong phobic avoidance component, the use of hypnosis and self-hypnotic relaxation can also be useful.

i really hope this helps.

Does anyone have a natural or herbal cure for heartburn?

I would love a reply from a naturopath or similar .

There are many heartburn natural remedies that you can add to your pantry for use when symptoms of heartburn flare up.

One of the popular home remedies for heartburn is fennel. You may have fennel seeds in your spice rack. You can make a tea by seeping one or two teaspoons of seeds in boiling water. There are also heartburn natural remedies available from companies that sell other herbs and natural products. Many of these include fennel oil.

Another one of the home remedies for heartburn is peppermint. Other mints may be useful as well. Peppermint oil is an ingredient in several over the counter heartburn products. Peppermint and other mint oils are included in some heartburn natural remedies. You can grow peppermint in your herb garden. For heartburn relief, you can chew on the washed leaves and stems or add them to your fennel tea. It will not only provide additional relief, but improve the flavor of the tea. Many herbal teas are home remedies for heartburn, but caffeinated teas should be avoided. Caffeinated beverages may worsen the symptoms.

Ginger or gingerroot is an ingredient in many heartburn natural remedies. Gingerroot is available at many grocery stores and is used in cooking, especially in Thai or Asian foods. Rhubarb is one of the home remedies for heartburn. It is not commonly found in products available for purchase as heartburn relief, but chewing on a chilled chunk may provide quick relief. Not only is the rhubarb soothing, but the chewing action increases the flow of saliva and saliva naturally neutralizes the stomach acid that causes the heartburn symptoms.

That’s My Best Answer! Hope it can help!

Why is there no regulation/requirement of evidence/safety for Alternative Medicines?

I asked this in another section but no one seemed interested haha so I thought Id have a go here..

What I mean by this question is:

In proper science (hehe :P joking) when we have a new idea for a treatment plan or a drug – we (generally) have to go through research proposals, ethics approvals, then months/years of animal testing, followed by months/years of clinical trials.

All of this is regulated and must be approved by the relevant bodies to ensure safety and efficacy. You must provide evidence!!! evidence!!!!!

Why do alternative medicines and procedures get away with not doing the same thing? Why are they not held to the same standards of safety as ‘traditional’ medicine is? ‘Natural Herbal’ remedies contain chemicals just as a synthetic drug does. This is basic biochem. Alternative therapies have an effect on the body just as a traditional ones do.

What do you guys think?

They actually don’t get away with it.

If a drug (or ‘alternative medicine’) makes a claim that states it can cure a disease, prevent sickness, or be used in place of an FDA approved treatment without proper submission and approval, a warning letter is issued.

You can see a wide variety of these on the FDA website.

Does anyone have a herbal remedy for Insomnia and migraines?

I have been suffering from migraines and insomnia for aprrox 3 months. My doctor says they are probably related to each other. He has given me serval types of pain pills, and sleeping pills. Which work. But make me sleepy, and sluggish the next day. I work as a registered nurse so I know about the prescription medications. But of course we were never taught about Herbal remedies. Does any one have any that really work. I am having a real hard time with this because I have a demanding job and a family to take care of. And I feel completely worn out. My doctor does have me set up with specialist. But my appointments are not for some time.
I don’t do illegal drugs.

Have you tried melatonin for sleep? You can buy it at any vitamin store or drug store. You take it about two hours before bed time. It has no side effects and no "sleep hangover" in the morning. If that doesn’t work, there is a new prescription med called Rozerem. It is like a high potency melatonin and I’ve seen people have pretty good luck. Both Rozerem and melatonin may take a week or so to really know if they are working.

I just started taking magnesium for migraines. So far, so good. I have read numerous studies touting the benefits of magnesium and most suggest 250-500 mg/day.

Hope something works for you.

is this how to build a supercritical fluid extractor? it is for making herbal extracts and essential oils.?

i’ve read about making a small one using butane but i want to stick to the safer solvent, c02. plus the butane one is too small volume. I want 10L plus. I plan on adapting a large pressure cooker. i’ve learned that the critical pressure for co2 is 1100 psi, which is higher than it comes in the canister. if i heat the cooker while pressurising it will i achieve the pressure? the critical temp for co2 is 88F so i have to stay above that anyways. if i know what i’m talking about so far, i could heat the pressure cooker while pumping co2 into until I achieve the right pressure and temp at which point i could open a valvue at the bottom of the cooker at a rate that stays above critical.. will it work? is there a better way? am i doing anything dangerous or illegal without a licence? any answers appreciated.

Since the highest rated pressure cooker you’ll find is around 15 PSI, I’d have to say, go for it!

Killing yourself via a compressed gas explosion is entirely legal.

What is a good website to purchase herbal products?

I want a website to purchase herbal products for my 6 month old- I found a few sites- but im not into bringing my daughter to the doctor unless it’s something I have no control over. Please give me websites where I can purchase products for infants. Thank you!

Well, I don’t think you’ll find an herbal company that sells a lot of products for infants because most herbs haven’t been researched for safety in infants and commonly aren’t recommended for anyone under 18 years old.
For a child as young as 6 months, I would only give them an herbal product if the label specifically listed a dosage for that age or if a doctor said the proper dose for an herb (although it’s hard to find a pediatrician that knows about supplements, unfortunately).

There are several good companies that sell herbal products that have good quality, but they would have those same recommendations. http://www.swansonvitamins.com http://www.puritanspride.com and http://www.vitacost.com are a few of the better ones. Good luck and I hope I helped!

Do you believe in natural healing alternatives like aroma therapy, herbal teas and meditation?

Do you think they can have real health benifits?

No.

I think seeing an alternative practitioner, and getting the time and undivided attention you pay for and the opportunity to talk about yourself and your problem(s) can make you feel more relaxed, and happy that someone is taking you seriously, and all that makes you feel better.

Similarly treating yourself to aromatherapy baths etc makes you feel more relaxed and less stressed. So does meditation.

And for very minor ailments, sometimes teas and other natural ‘treatments’ can make you feel better, and are in any case harmless

But I’m strongly against advocating alternative ‘healing’ for genuine illnesses. In this context alternative is another word for unproven. If any alternative medicine had been proven to work, it would no longer be alternative medicine, it would just be medicine.

I use the YA Cancer forum a lot, and every day people with no experience or knowledge of cancer post advising terrified, desperate and highly vulnerable people to abandon conventional treatment and go with untested, unproven, ineffective and sometimes dangerous alternatives.

People who fear for their lives are advised to rely on herbs, juices, water (!), apricot kernels, shark cartilage, cottage cheese, restrictive diets, teas, vitamin C. hydrogen peroxide, electrical devices, mistletoe and other hocus pocus.

I am deeply concerned that there are people who might decide to abandon treatment that would give them a chance of cure or remission and invest money, hope and – most dangerous of all – time on these ineffective ‘treatments’.

I was actually something of an alternatives enthusiast myself until I got cancer and did an enormous amount of research into possible alternatives and discovered the ruthless charlatanism of the muti-million pound ‘alternative cancer industry’ and that anyone with any understanding of the biology of cancer couldn’t possibly believe in such rubbish.

How do I get into a career in alternative medicine?

I would like to pursue a career in alternative medicine, something like acupuncture, aromatherapy or massage therapy, but I don’t know where to start.
What kind of degree or major would I need?

there are numerous schools that have such training, most however want you to have some college first. Most have an M.S. degree or offer what is known as a "first professional certificate", which one earns after a Bachelors degree. Most also offer an Associates degree, and for some specializations, a ‘diploma’. In many cases, after graduation, you sit for some kind of ‘licensing board exam’ (ask every school about the pass rate of their grads – if they balk at giving that info, walk away)

Very few schools in this sector are residential, so look for one local to you.

CAVEAT: every state has different rules about licensing, and it is up to YOU to research that (the schools should be able to assist you though)

What are the best herbal remedies for migraines?

I suffer from daily migraines. I have seen 4 neurologist and none have treated the causes of my migraines. I have taken just about every prescription and am now willing to venture into herbal remedies.

A chiropractor, like one poster mentioned, can do a lot of help, but there are tons of great homeopathic remedies that help with headaches and migranes. I really like the products on Dr. Angel’s website. Her migrane formula combines a bunch of different vitamins so you don’t have to take multiple things. Here’s the link:

I hope it helps you out! I’ve used her skin/hair stuff, and muscle supplements for aches, etc, and always loved them.
