Alternative medicines for pain control in a terminal cancer patient?
My father was diagnosed almost 3 years ago with throat cancer. He has been through two rounds of chemo and radiation and a neck dissection to remove a tumor. The cancer is back more aggressively than ever before and he is now under home hospice care. His prognosis is grim and doesn’t have much time. My question is concerning other forms of pain control. They have him on so many pills and they don’t seem to work very well……is there anything someone else has tried of an alternative method for attempting to control accute pain?

There is a pain patch thats given when a patient can no longer swallow pills, ask your doctor, also there is a self dose IV for morphine that will help as long as your doctor isn’t the kind who worries about the possibility of addiction for terminal patients. Ask him if he is so you will know if you need to change doctors at the last so your dad will be more comfortable. Remember too, that the meds hes on may make it sound bad because he loses his ability to restrain his moans, but he may be pretty much out of it. Certainly speak to his doctor about his pain they sometimes don’t realize how bad it is because of the "be brave" philosophy some medicos have.
